Split Fiction is a game to plan with a co-op partner. Start by deciding whether you will share a screen or play online on separate devices, then check which person needs the full game. This is a researched buying guide, not a completed playthrough review.

Do both players need to buy it?

For the full online adventure, EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ says one player must own the full game; the invited partner installs the free Friend’s Pass. The pass is not a free, independently playable copy of the entire game.

The same FAQ describes a limited introductory demo playable by two Friend’s Pass users. Our buying suggestion: try that opening together before deciding whether you enjoy coordinating in this style of game. Do not buy two full copies merely because you are using different supported platforms.

Local co-op or online cross-play?

Your plan What to check before buying
Play together on one screen Controller/input setup and the local co-op option on your platform
Play online on different platforms Both devices’ versions, EA accounts and the in-game cross-play settings
Join a full-game owner Install the Friend’s Pass on your own supported device; arrange who will host
Play the introduction first Use the documented two-pass demo route rather than assuming the whole game is free

EA lists PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 for Friend’s Pass and cross-platform play. Its FAQ distinguishes offline couch co-op from online access: online play needs linked platform/EA accounts, while its local co-op instructions do not require an EA account. Check the input requirements for your own setup.

Online platform charges are a separate question from buying the game. The US PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play. Read the equivalent membership terms for your chosen console; a free pass does not imply that every online service is free.

Can an original Switch owner play?

EA’s Switch 2 announcement describes local GameShare from a Switch 2 owner to another Switch 2 or an original Switch. It explicitly limits the original Switch to that guest route.

That is different from purchasing a standalone original-Switch version. Our finder therefore lists Switch 2, not original Switch, as a purchasable platform for this game. If GameShare is your plan, read EA’s connection and host requirements with your partner first. Nintendo’s online membership conditions in that announcement apply to online features; do not confuse them with the local wireless option.

Which store item should you choose?

The Steam listing separates the full game, Friend’s Pass and soundtrack. It also lists online/shared-screen co-op and PC requirements. Use the named product and current requirements as your reference, rather than relying on a bundle’s cover image.

Before checkout, confirm your partner’s platform, the ownership/pass arrangement, any online membership and your intended play setup. We do not provide a live cheapest-price claim or measured performance comparison. Compare another covered game if you are choosing between a solo evening and a shared adventure.
