Does Legends: Z-A work on the original Switch? Compare the Switch 2 Edition, upgrade pack, real-time battles and Mega Dimension DLC before buying.
Yes, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. If you already own the Switch game, there is a paid upgrade route. The other important difference from traditional Pokémon games is combat: battles happen in real time.
This is a sourced buying guide, rather than a scored playthrough review. Facts checked October 20, 2026.
Which version should you buy?
| What you own | What to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An original Switch, Lite or OLED | Nintendo Switch game | You can play without buying a new console. |
| A Switch 2, but no copy of Z-A | Switch 2 Edition | Includes the enhancements for the newer hardware. |
| A Switch 2 and the Switch game | Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack | Upgrades your existing physical or digital game. The base game is still required. |
| The Switch 2 Edition already | Check DLC separately | An upgrade pack and a story expansion serve different purposes. |
The official version announcement confirms improved graphics and frame rates on Switch 2. It also says the Switch 2 Edition runs as the original game on a Switch. Choose for your hardware and existing ownership; a new console is not required to play Z-A.
Which languages do the US versions support?
Both linked US Nintendo listings include American English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. They also list French, Canadian French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin American Spanish and Korean.
| Product checked | Storefront | Language source |
|---|---|---|
| Switch base game | United States | Nintendo Switch product details |
| Switch 2 Edition | United States | Switch 2 Edition product details |
Nintendo labels these as supported languages; this list is not a promise of full voice acting. These checks cover the linked US products, rather than every imported game card.
Can you use imported game cards with local DLC?
Check DLC compatibility separately from whether a game card runs. Nintendo’s regional compatibility FAQ says Switch game cards generally are not region locked, with an exception for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. It also says DLC must match the game’s region. The eShop country follows your Nintendo Account country setting.
Before buying Mega Dimension for an imported copy, check the game’s supported region in Software Information → Support Information and compare it with the DLC listing. Do not treat a US store link as confirmation that DLC will work with any imported copy. If you already own the game, establish compatibility before paying for an expansion or another bundle.
Is Z-A turn-based like the older Pokémon games?
No. Trainers and Pokémon move during combat, and move timing and range matter. Catching and team building remain part of the loop, but someone looking for battles with no real-time movement should consider a different game. See the official combat explanation.
Our take: choose Z-A if catching Pokémon appeals to you and you want to move around in battles. If you mainly want to select commands at your own pace, compare Digimon Story: Time Stranger first.
Does the upgrade pack include Mega Dimension?
No: treat the hardware upgrade and Mega Dimension as separate purchases. The upgrade improves presentation on Switch 2; Mega Dimension adds content and works with either edition. Nintendo’s DLC guide explains the requirements. Buy the base game first if you are still deciding whether you like the combat.

Should you wait for the game + Mega Dimension bundle?
If you want both the game and its expansion, compare the package before buying them separately. An official bundle announced for October 29, 2026 includes the Switch 2 Edition and Mega Dimension on one game card. As of this guide’s October 20 check, that release date is still ahead. It is not automatically cheaper: compare your local total price and preferred format. If you already own the game, the DLC alone may meet your needs.
What if the upgrade is not showing up?
Check that the upgrade is purchased on the account you are using, available on the console, and that the game is updated. The enhanced features require Switch 2. Follow Nintendo’s upgrade troubleshooting steps before buying another copy.
